Ways to Disinfect Granite Countertops

Granite countertops always seem to be popular. Some homeowners love granite simply because it’s beautiful. As a natural stone, every granite slab is unique, which makes it an appealing material for countertops. Granite also comes in an array of colors and textures, so it’s easy to use granite for practically any design plan or color scheme.

Fortunately, granite is incredibly durable as well. As a long-lasting material, it can survive for decades and continue to look fantastic. When properly sealed, granite countertops are practically impervious to bacteria. However, that doesn’t mean that you should avoid cleaning or disinfecting your countertops.

What to Use

For daily upkeep, you can simply use hot water and dish soap. The dish soap doesn’t have to be anything fancy, nor does it have to specifically be formulated for granite. Most dish soaps are relatively mild, so hot water, soap, and a soft cloth should work just fine. If you need a stronger disinfectant, you can use a 50:50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water. Pour the water and alcohol mixture into a spray bottle and spray it onto your countertops. After that, allow it to sit for 3-5 minutes. That’ll give it time to kill any bacteria. Once enough time has passed, you can simply wipe it away with a microfiber cloth and rinse the area with water.

If you prefer, you can invest in cleaning solutions that are formulated for granite, but you certainly don’t have to buy them. Some all-purpose cleaners say that they’re safe for granite. Don’t guess. Be sure to read the label.  Dish soap will work fine in most cases, and you can simply mix isopropyl alcohol with water to have something stronger.

What to Avoid

Never use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. Avoid any abrasive pads since they can easily scratch or chip the surface.
